1972 DeTomaso Pantera
Description
This immaculate, concours-level DeTomaso Pantera was masterfully built by Shell Burger of Shell Burger Classics in Arizona—a name synonymous with elite craftsmanship. Shell's work has been recognized at the world-renowned Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a rare feat among builders, and this Pantera is a testament to his meticulous attention to detail. The car has claimed numerous awards and been extensively featured in the automotive press, including Best of Show and Best Engine at Concorso Italiano, People’s Choice in Las Vegas, a Black Horse Cover Car at Monterey, and multiple appearances in Pantera International, Classiccars (Feb 2007), Velocity (Nov 2008), and the book “Extreme Panteras.”
Body & Paint:
Finished in PPG Dark Cranberry Metallic (#73866), this Pantera’s body is flawless. Featuring Group 4 steel flares, butt-welded for strength and structural integrity, the body has been reinforced in key areas including around taillights, decklid hinges, and the rear roofline. All surfaces are laser-straight, mirror-smooth, and professionally finished. The underside is satin black powder-coated with provisions for stainless lines and exhaust. Additional details include a custom louvered rear panel, square quartz headlights, Carello Group 4 taillights, and clever protective metal reinforcements at the deck lid corners to prevent chipping. The Group 4 silhouette, wider than even the GT5S, gives the car a bold, aggressive stance.
Engine & Performance:
Built by Kuntz & Company—an NHRA-record-holding engine builder—the original 351 Cleveland was stroked to 383 CID, producing over 520 HP and 510 lb-ft of torque. The engine is balanced, blueprinted, and features high-end internals: SVO stud girdle, Venolia pistons, Child & Alberts rods, Crane roller rockers, Crower pushrods, SVO A-3 aluminum heads, and a polished Jack Roush aluminum intake. It breathes through a flowed 750 CFM Holley carb, Jet-Hot coated GT5 headers, and features a 10-quart oil pan, solid lifter cam, and MSD ignition with 6,300 RPM chip. It’s a motor that sounds as aggressive as it performs—raw, mechanical, and race-ready.
Interior:
The cabin is a masterclass in luxury, upholstered entirely in Connolly leather from England, the same used by Rolls-Royce. Stock seats, dash, headliner, and trim have all been covered in rich leather. A custom burlwood dash, Momo steering wheel, VDO gauges, and Kenwood audio system complete the experience. Custom floor mats match the car’s unique color theme. The interior is in true show condition—flawless in both presentation and comfort.
Suspension & Braking:
All suspension components are upgraded to factory Group 5 racing spec, including Koni shocks, chrome control arms and sway bars, adjustable A-arms, and urethane bushings. Chromed components are even hidden in areas you’d only see on a lift, such as the steering rack and brackets. Braking is significantly improved with vented rotors, 4-piston calipers, and steel braided brake lines.
Wheels, Tires & Cooling:
This Pantera rolls on Wilkinson billet aluminum Group 4 wheels, 8x17 front / 12.5x17 rear, highly polished inside and out, wrapped in Dunlop 245/40 ZR17 (front) and 335/35 ZR17 (rear) rubber. The Ron Davis Racing cooling system features dual sucker fans, aluminum water pump, chrome and stainless tubing, rotary A/C pump, and a front-mounted condenser. Cooling efficiency and reliability are top-tier.
Transmission & Drivetrain:
The ZF transaxle is highly polished, re-geared with 4.22:1 final drive, and safety-wired. A Kevlar clutch, chromed Spicer half-shafts, and braided stainless lines complete the drivetrain. Shifting is crisp and reliable—performance matched with show-stopping presentation.
Electrical:
The entire electrical system has been upgraded with all-new wiring, eliminating typical Italian electrical issues. Every component is cleanly routed and dependable.
Driving Experience:
This Pantera is a no-compromise build—show and go in equal measure. With its high-performance stroker engine, aggressive cam, and concours-worthy finish, it draws a crowd everywhere it goes. Even a quick gas station stop attracts attention. Many in the Pantera community consider this one of the finest Panteras in existence—a car that could hold its own at SEMA, Pebble Beach, or the track.
