Description
World Class Bel Air Custom Bubble Top 1,015hp 632ci V8 Tremec 5 speed A/C
A dyno-proven 1,015 horsepower gives this 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air performance as dramatic as its unmistakable bubble-top profile. Built from the ground up as a full-scale Pro Touring custom, it features a 632ci big-block V8, a one-off perimeter chassis and extensive work by professional shops and experienced racing fabricators. Muscle Car Accessories of Taylorsville, North Carolina, performed the paint and bodywork, while former Holman & Moody employee Ken Thompson fabricated the chassis. Build photos and a dyno sheet accompany the car.
The body is finished in Black and Toyota Speedway Blue, with the two colors divided by restored brightwork professionally plated by Paul's Chrome Plating of Evans City, Pennsylvania. Extensive body modifications include tucked, filled and reshaped bumpers, a filled cowl panel, shaved rear trim and a monochromatic rear valance fitted with chrome-trimmed LED taillights. A custom steel hood incorporates a functional 4" cowl-induction scoop and unique leading-edge trim, while smoked glass, polished windshield wipers and traditional Bel Air scripts retain recognizable elements of the original design. Polished Budnik Ice wheels measure 18" up front and 20" at the rear, mounting 245/45ZR18 and 275/45ZR20 Goodyear Eagle F1 tires.
Power comes from a 632ci Dart Big M iron-block V8 rated by the accompanying dyno sheet at 1,015 horsepower and 875 lb-ft of torque. Its internal and valvetrain components include a Callies Magnum crankshaft, JE pistons, Jesel roller lifters and Jesel roller rockers, while polished Pro-Filer aluminum cylinder heads and a matching intake support an AED 1,250-cfm carburetor beneath a custom cowl-induction air cleaner. An MSD Pro-Billet distributor, Taylor ignition wires, custom Ken Thompson headers and a Billet Specialties Tru Trac accessory drive complete the engine, along with a polished alternator, Edelbrock water pump and air-conditioning compressor. Cooling is handled by a Flex-A-Lite aluminum radiator with electric fans. A Tremec TKO600 5-speed manual transmission sends power to a Moser 12-bolt rear axle with 3.37 gears and a limited-slip differential. The custom perimeter chassis was fabricated by Ken Thompson and incorporates NASCAR-inspired front and rear suspension assemblies, double-adjustable QA1 coilovers, heavy-duty front and rear sway bars, mini-tubbed rear wheelhouses and power steering with a NASCAR-style steering box. Wilwood four-wheel power disc brakes use red multi-piston calipers with drilled and slotted rotors, while a custom exhaust system exits through NASCAR-style boom tubes ahead of the rear wheels. A 25-gallon fuel tank supports extended street use, and the highly finished undercarriage reflects the same attention given to the visible portions of the build.
Inside, a custom leather interior by Ray Hester of Lexington, North Carolina, places four modified SCAT Procar bucket seats within the extensively revised cabin. Simpson harnesses and an 6-point roll cage with a removable harness bar provide competition-inspired restraint, while the custom flat floor and body channeling allow the Bel Air to sit lower over its purpose-built chassis. A body-color dashboard houses AutoMeter C2 instrumentation, and the driver operates the Tremec transmission through a traditional Hurst shifter mounted in the custom steel center console. Additional equipment includes an Ididit tilt steering column, a polished leather-wrapped steering wheel, Wilwood pedals, power windows and modern air conditioning. Custom leather side panels, a sculpted headliner, fitted carpeting and a fully upholstered trunk with a concealed relocated battery complete the cabin.
Few custom builds pursue this level of power, fabrication and presentation while retaining such an immediately recognizable original shape. The dyno sheet confirms the performance behind the polished engine compartment, while the build photos document the extensive work beneath the finished body. It is a genuine thousand-horsepower bubble top with the chassis, controls and attitude to make every mile feel like the main event.
